I am looking in to buying my first bike. As a 130lb, 5'6" female and a first time rider is the SV-s a good choice?

Not really. For a first bike you're going to want something small and not so powerful. Many professional riders suggest that you start on something smaller than a 500cc. I personally started on a 6 but I'm a 5'11 210lb guy and even after two years, the bike can scare me.

Care is the operative word...If you are careful, it shouldn't be too much to handle. Regardless if you are 210 or 130lbs, if you yank on the throttle too much, the front wheel is going to come off the ground. Be careful and ride like you are on glass until you are comfortable.

I have ridden since 1959, the SV650 is a wonderful first bike, everything you could want but killer speed, which comes later after experience. Wife is 5'2" (weight unknown) and she started on a 1970 Triumph Daytona which was fun and respectably fast. The SV650 might also be able to be lowered a bit for comfortable confidence. Avoid Buell Blast. Be careful, have fun.

I am female and just bought a sv1000s. I am 5'6". I have had several years of experience riding. I would recommend the sv650s. It is lower and lighter. I had to have my 1000 lowered 2". Have fun!

I have the sv1000s. I drove a mild mannered 600cc yamaha sport bike before that, and concider the sv1000s a big step up. You chould check out www.beginnerbikes.com They have a lot of good articles on getting that first bike. (Actually I think the best first bike is a dirt bike- you can learn a lot with out getting hurt). The 650 is still a pretty rip snortin little machine, when you concider the horsepower it has and what it weighs.
Hope this helps...email me if you want

The SV650 would be a wise choice, try learning on a dirt bike, it hurts alot less when you fall

My first bike was a 2002 SV650S. It was the perfect bike to learn on. Enough power to have fun with and not get into too much trouble, although I scared the doo-doo out of myself a few times. Really easy to handle and can hang with any bike in the twisties.
