I installed aftermarket skid plates on my 650 it bounces over most obsticles without any problem. Just remember horsepower overcomes most problems. As far as fuel mileage I am a large rider (400 + lbs ) so consequintly my machine uses more gas to haul my big but around that said we ride about 50 miles in any given day out and we ride hard, one tank of gas is all it takes.

the ground clearence is not the best but with skid plates you can slide over rocks and i can get about 80miles to a tank with out runing out
