2006 Vulcan 500 Fuel usage before having to kick into reserve.

On my Vulcan 500, I know the specs say it's a 4 gallon tank. And from what I thought I read someplace my main should be 3.2 gallons, and reserve would be the last .8 gallons. Yesterday (9/5/06) was the first time, I was forced to switch to reserve, and I had only put on about 138 miles (all but 20mi were highway riding @70-75mph). I thought It was kinda odd, so I switched it to reserve, hit the fuel station (I was about 5 miles from home at that point) and fueled up, and put in about 2.75 gallons.. That didn't make sense to me, that would imply that I had to switch to reserve at about 2.5 gallons used.

Am I fueling wrong? I usualy place the bike on the kick stand, and what should be the high side of the tank (right side) next to the gas pump, and fill it til it's just below the filler neck.

Should I have stradled the bike upright? Then fueled it? Because it seems very odd to me, that I'd have to kick into reserve after only using 2.5 (maybe 2.6) gallons of gas...

UNLESS.. it's really only a 3.5 gallon tank?

Gary:
I had a similar experience. With around 125 on the trip odometer following a full fill, I the engine started to sputter. This occured on a curve while into a real exciting lean.

I figured fuel was sloshing around and the engine pulled some air while i was getting some cheap thrills leaning into the corner.

As a result I always top up at 120 miles.

Note: There has been some question about the speedo accuracy. Perhaps it applies to odometer as well.
