does anyone know or have this problem? Oil coming out of the air filter. Half a quart every 500 miles?

If you change the pipes or air cleaner on your bike, oil will leak out of your air filter. I would recommend re-jetting your carb or put the stock pipes back on. This is normal but yours sounds like it is leaking MUCH more than it should. Mine leaks a small amount, not even enough to lower the level on the dip-stick. Maybe you dont have the right pipe/air cleaner combination. I will recommend cycle-shack slip-ons and the screaming eagle high flow air cleaner kit for best performance, sound and looks. Good luck.

After I reached 500 miles, (completely stock 2002 Sportster 1200 Custom), I started to see oil splater on the side of my bike, coming from the air filter cover. I just received my 1k service, and I continue to see spater after riding all day. The amount of oil I see is very little, but is is still, somehow, sneaking through the air filter cover.

You are not alone!

Leak!!! I too am losing around a quart every 500 miles, it's unacceptable on 2002 motorcycle. I have the Screamin' Eagle high flow air cleaner and Vance and Hines pipes on my bike, in fact, the were installed on the bike by the dealer before I even purchased it. Never was I told of any potential for leaks. My bike has been in the shop 3 times in 2 months, the dealer can not fix the problem and the factory doesn't care. The customer service (Harley Factory Support) told me to get the stock pipes and air cleaner put back on the bike, eventhough, my bike didn't have them when I bought it!!!). If i wanted a bike that sounded like a Honda I would have bought one. I am contemplating suing my dealer and/or H-D under the lemon law statutes because I can not live with this bike.

Yes, on my 96 model. I'm going to visit with one or 2 dealers on this.

I have a XLH 1200, 2002 year model and it also leaks in the same place. I've been told their is nothing that can be done about it, Sportys are known for this leak. Mine doesn't leak near that much oil but still leaks. What I have been doing is cleaning the oil from inside the air breather every so often. That has seemed to help keep it from leaking on every ride, also was told not to lope the bike, the more you lope it, the more oil leaks, I now wind my gears tighter before shifting and don't go into 5th until I'm around 50 to 55 mph, this has also seemed to help alot. I would like to know if anyone finds any answers to this problem.

yup. got a 2002 1200c xlh and it leaks more oil than my old pickup. not happy. turns out that they make kits to redirect the oil vapor that comes out of the heads. If your not sure what I'm talking about, take the air breather off and start the bike up. you can't miss the problem.

This problem can be solved. There is an article at the following URL that suggests some fixes

http://www.sportster.org/tech/oil-in-ac/

There are a pair of breather holes that drain into the air cleaner. Oil blowing out it normal(yes, I know that freaks some people out). If you don't want this to happen, you will need to create a drain that route out to the ground. Make sure its behind the rear wheel!

I have a 2002 1200 Custom. Before I picked up the bike I had the baffles drilled on the stock pipes and the carb re-jetted by the dealer. My carb would spit when I would sit at idle then twist the throtle to take off. The spitting shoots a gas oil mixture into the air filter.
The more spitting the more oil showed up on the pipes. I told the dealer about this and they rejetted (adjusted the air fuel mixture scerw)the carb for me. Now the carb spits once in a blue moon. 500 miles later no oil on the pipes.
