| OK, first issue, does the 883 (or 883r) have hydraulic lash adjusters? And if not, what is the recommended service interval for adjustments? And know for the real stuff. Currently I ride an older Honda Shadow VT700c (which I bought about 3 years ago) and I love it, but it is from 1985 and both last year and this year I have had a problem where I needed to order a part and that part take quite a long time to come in (3 or 4 weeks). Living in Chicago, this could be a good part of the summer or fall. I do ride almost year round (unless there is snow or the temps are in the 20’s), but prefer 2 wheels to 4 even in rain. Prior to this I had a Suzuki gs450l and a Yamaha xs400 (over the course of 18 years), so I am not a beginner, but I do not favor “large” bikes either. I am about 5 foot 7 and about 160 pounds. I ride between 8K and 10K per year and am looking for an economical bike. I had been looking at the F650CS from BMW but the 6000 mile value adjustments, plus the $100+ oil changes make it not possible for me. I have also considered the Vstrom 650 and SV650 but I don’t want to go back to maintaining a chain. What seems to be left are the Vulcan 750, and the Intruder 800 (the newer shadows do not do anything for me at all). They are water cooled, have hydraulic lash adjusters, are shaft driven (read low maintenance). I have always liked the 883, but the vibes have kept me away. With them gone, I am wondering if the 883 (or 883r) could be considered an economical bike. How much more than regular oil changes (which I would do myself) is the “norm”? What is the life expectancy of this bike (would 60,000+ miles be crazy)? It is a little heaver than I am used to but would think I could get used to it.

| Hydraulic valves: no maintenance required. The 883 with the rubber mounted engine is a big improvement over the previous models. I can sit at 80 mph on the freeway all day if I want to. I commute 160 miles per week on this bike, and average about 60 mpg. Regular oil changes are easy to do, as is the primary chain adjustment. This is a very low maintenance machine, is quick and fast enough for me, and I have been riding over 35 years. This bike should easily last 60,000 miles if you do the required maintenance. The bike is heavy, but once it is moving the sensation is one of stability and predictibility, not weight.
