Does anyone know how the performance of a boxer motor compares with a V-twin with similar CCs

An interesting question. The key is to compare air-cooled V-twins to the air-cooled Boxer. the boxer does have an oil cooler- but relies on air as primary cooling. The Harley Sportster 1200 has similar size. No comparison in power, the boxer makes 50% ! more horsepower and has similar torque. Air cooled Ducati twins make similar power to the boxer- but usually have a little less torque. For a 1170cc motor the boxer is tuned very tight and proves hard to beat in the air cooled CC/hp comparisons. To achieve max power - they do require premium fuel. If you add a big radiator to cool the motor a few twins beat the boxer for horsepower - like the V-rod's 1130cc V-twin (designed by porche), the Suzuki TL1000 and Ducati 999 series. But the boxer still hangs with them in the torque dept.
