There's a replacement part for the cam tensioner that I have heard is called the "dohickey?" Can you tell me if this is a neccessary part replacement for the KLR650 and what it is exactly? Or is this just a nonsense item? And what is the approximate top speed for the KLR 650?

The cam chain tensioner is not the "doohicky.}" The counterbalancer chain adjustor is the doohicky and it costs about $40 with some friends from KLR650.net to help change it and I and many other have done it for peace of mind (mine was fine when I changed it) It has a history of failure of 1 in 5 for the tensioner spring breaking in the first 10000 miles and about 1 in 10 for the part breaking. There is a debate about the cause with the consensus being that overtightening causes the part failure and vibration causes the spring failure.

The top speed of a KLR is between 95 and 105 stock depending on many factors. Go the the following websxitesx to get more answers
