650 GS IS A GREAT BIKE I OWN ONE.
NOT THE BEST HIGHWAY BIKE A LITTLE SMALL.
WILL DO 70M.P.H.AT ALMOST 5000R.P.M.
7500R.P.M. IS RED LINE.I WOULD GO BIGGER IF SPENT 2HRS A DAY

John, I think the F650GS would be a great bike for back country roads and exploring, but would definitely go with a twin or inline four cylinder bike (with at least 750cc) for daily commutes of an hour each way. I ride a K1200RS, which is a dream on the highway, but am thinking about getting a F650GS for fire/logging road adventures. Ride safe. Bill

John- I continously read reviews where people talk about 500-650 cc bikes as starter bikes, small, and so forth. This bike will top out at 105 mph, as far as I am concerned there is no reason to go above 70 mph unless you dont care about losing your license. In short, this bike will handle it and if you on occasion want to go a lot faster it will do that too. If you generally drive faster than 70 mph, get a heavier, bigger bike that was designed to handle that type of duty without shaking your nerves.

I'm about your size - 10 lbs. lighter, but same height. I've put 3000+ miles on a F 650 GS since I bought it new in April. I think it would be a fine commuting bike. It is very maneuverable, on highway and in city -- in fact, in Europe, it is BMW's best seller because it is so "navigable" in urban situations. If your highway time is at full speed (over 65), then you may find it a bit underpowered, because it really is not designed to be an asphalt tourer. If, however, you are going between 45 - 60, it handles that fine. It has excellent add-on side and tank bags, and I've found it to handle well in the rain. The ABS brakes make it secure and the low center of gravity make it easy to maneuver. I would think it an excellent commuting bike unless you commute at very high speed where 50 hp may not be enough. Good luck.

I'm 5'11" and 185 (I weighed 225 when I got the bike!) and it is a great commuter. The only thing that might not work so well is the seat--it's not terribly comfortable if you're on it a long time. But the size, handling, gas mileage, etc. are all perfect. Plus it will go 70 mph all day--plenty of get up and go for normal riding.

I'm 6-1 and 225 lbs and my F650GS has plenty of power. At 65 mph, a small roll of the throttle and it quickly hits 75mph. It tops out at 100 @ 7000rpm. I'm very happy with it. Any bigger would be over kill.
