I am trying to decide if I should buy the 599 or the 919. I already have a Spirit 750 (which is a great bike) but I know that after I graduate from college I am gonna want a change of pace. So my question is: for someone who will have over 2 years of riding a cruiser (and none on sport bikes) should I buy the 599 because it's good for beginners or could I safely jump right to the 919? My ultimate goal is a 919, and the 599 would serve as a stepping stone (if its necessary).

I am 19 years old and have just over one year of riding experience. I'm a freshman in college and am currently riding the '04 919. It's a great bike and not too hard to jump in to if you think you can handle it. It's a fairly heavy bike but it doesn't tire you out quite as much because of the confortable sitting position. I took this thing down to Arkansas on a road trip from Cinci, and you can ride all day very confortably. It has a lot of power and sometimes just stands up on accident when accelerating a bit too fast through an intersection. My first bike was a 'zuk gs500. I rode that for the first 4 months and then after the summer switched to the 919. I'm personally glad I got the 500 first because it got me confortable with the sport bike idea. The 599 is quite a big step up from the gs500 as it has liquid-cooling and has 4-cylinders as apposed to 2 on the suzuki. 599 has plenty of power for a sport bike. Ultimately, you'll have to decide for yourself what you think you can handle at this point, but if you get the 599 first, you can't go wrong.

The only benefit I can see of the 919 would be if you are going to do a LOT of interstate riding or are two up a lot. 600cc's doesn't have the torque of 900, it's that simple. But if neither of those two apply, get the 599. The updated 2006 gauge package is the bomb, the bike is lighter, cheaper to buy, insure and operate.

I would have to say that the 599 is a better choice it will offer all the power you really need and in actuallity all the power you can really use in a practical street application. I also think it will be an easier transition from a 750cc cruiser to a 600cc sport type bike rather than a very strong 919. The 599 will be chaeper on insurance and in my opinion more fun to ride. I work in sales at central maine power sports in lewiston Maine so I have ridden both and although the 919 no doubt has more power the 599 is more managable in town. Currently the shop put a fmf pipe and jet kit with a fender eliminator kit after maret turn signals and are trying to get some mirrors. Let me just say that aside from making a good looking bike even more attractive that jet kit and pipe really woke that bike up. Trevor
