Hi,

I am a mature 24 year old new rider that took the MSF course last year (passed with flying colours). I have a fairly good ability to pick up new skills and have decent muscle memory.

Here is my question. I will be buying my first bike late March and I am between a Monster 620 and a Monster S2R. There is only about a $100 difference in insurance and cost is not too much of a factor for me. The dealer says that the S2R (the bike I want) would be good for a first bike. I don't want to be guilty hubris. Is the S2R too much bike for a new rider?

Thanks,

Alan

I just bought a 749 Dark and put about 1000 miles in 6 weeks (previously only rode 600 miles on cruiser bike) and am confident I made the right decision. It's up to the maturity of the rider. I did research on both the 620 and S2R for my girlfriend and at the end we decided from HP and weight that the S2R was definitely the choice. I only recommend the 620 to people who are terribly uncoordinated or to someone who just wants a stylish bike to stay in town. But to answer you question...as long as you initially take it easy on the throttle until you get a better feel for the bike (which you will for at least the first 600-1000 miles for breaking the bike in). Ride safe.

Not sure if you've already picked up the bike or not... Go for it.. I finished the MSF course two months ago, and chose the S2R as my first bike. I'm taking it easy as I learn the ropes, but it's not too much bike... It'll hold you for awhile until you want more power to play with you can do plenty of upgrades later aswell... Don't feel odd about buying the best looking bike... People that like Ducatis' love them for a reason.. If you like it get it... You'll love it.... Take it easy... I had the same concerns.... You're going about it the right way in my opinion.. Cautiously..

The S2R is more powerful, obviously. But, it's not scary powerful--the delivery is very consistent. If your as responsible as you seem, it's a great choice for a first bike.

Hey Alan,
Thanks for asking the question! Oddly I also just took the MSF course and recently selected the S2R (Dark) for my first bike. I spent alot of time looking at options including HD Sportster, Buell option, the Ducati 620s, and even thought about waiting for the 695 to come out next month. I also read all of the reviews that I could find. In the end I decided on the S2R. It's a bit more $ than the 620 or 695 but look at what you get for the money: more horse power, real nice exaust configuration, and how about that great single sided swing arm. It's a nice little upgrade from the 620s and I deceided that it's not overboard. The Ducati dealer will be delivering it in about a week. I'll be out there taking it slow just like you. Simpatico! Enjoy yours. Drive safe.

Jim

Alan,

I think the question you pose is a good one. In my opinion both bikes are good to learn on, however I would recommend the S2R over the 620. Within a year or so you would want to upgrade from the 620 to something else. Rather then do that, you will not outgrow the S2R. Just ride safe within your limits and you'll be fine. Cheers.
