Has anyone mounted hard-bags to this bike yet? What works well? Also, is the engine protector just for looks, or is it tough enough to deflect thrown-up rocks? Any info on 2-up riding and hard-bags?

The silly plastic bash plate is just for looks. I predict Jesse Luggage will be one of the first with a "real" alternative.

I've mounted Give E36 side cases and a E45 top box. I really like them and the were not real expensive. I can get 2 full face helmets in the topbox.

I mounted the MoTech QuickLock system for sidebags and a Givi-rack for the Topcase. Both are great, although Givi will produce their own QuickLock-system in the future (the topcase-carrier already is prepared for that).
The engine protector is just for looks, but Suzuki itself will be offering a more robust protector in the near future. 2-up riding & hardbags: no problemo.

You can see the Jesse bags here: http://www.mtariders.com/forum/messages/1065/3277.html?1022033036
I just put a deposit on a grey DL and supposedly the dealer will have the Suzuki hard bags, trunk and mounting kit within a week. If he doesn't, then the deal is off.

Yes. I have Givi E21 Cruiser side cases and a Givi E460 rear trunk case...all mounted on the Suzuki OEM luggage rack which is compatible with Givi cases. They're wonderful!

I have the OEM Kappa bags (set of 3) that I purchased with the bike. The Bags are "huge" & very usuful. I've used a soft saddle-bags for the soul purpose of lane-splitting. But, the top case really hasn't come off since I bought my V-Strom. I've used the side bags on a trip down to CA & back last year. More than enough capacity, but remember to add more pre-load when you use them. I've got about 4k miles & the top case is rattling more and more as milage piles. As for the engine protector, it'll deflect most of what's thrown off the front wheel, but you should really worry about your unportected radiator fins!!! I had 3 nickel sized areas about 1/4" deep rock impacts. I've made a radiator guard out of vent covers used in homes, cut down to size & painted. My wife's only 5' and 110lbs, so not much of a weight, but with 3 lines showing on preload at back, the bike simply flows through any curves. I'm totally happy with the V-Strom, except the soggy forks. I've started working on that too...racetech.
