It will go over 90mph top end. Cruises 75-80 without much trouble as long as its not windy. Lots of vibration. It's fine on expressway get a good seat though for long rides over 2 hours.

You can treat the KLR engine almost like it is a heavy duty diesel engine. It doesn't seem to care as long as you keep the engine speed above about 2500rpm. With the stock gearing an indicated 106mph is the best I could manage in a tuck with street tires on level ground. With knobbies on hardpack dirt the best I could manage was 97mph in a tuck. Sitting straight up it will go about 90 in the dirt and 95 on pavement. It seems reasonably happy up to about 90, then it shakes some. It will go 80 all day long and still return about 50mpg. My longest day on the KLR is 611 miles, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Unless your buddies like to travel at go-to-jail speeds constantly, the KLR will easily keep up. And in the curves, it will chew cruisers up like they are fish out of water-not even close in the twisties. It will be like a Miata vs. a Winnebago!

I agree with David. All day at 80mph is easy and fun. And at that speed you won't even notice the vibrations. When you take a KLR for a test ride for the first time ever don't get scared of vibes you feel at first. My 2001 gets much smoother after the engine warmes up properly.

I currently own a 2004 KLR650. Keeping up with your buddies should be no problem but dealing with the vibration and seat may take getting used to. Great bike! 70-75 mph not a problem.

I agree with all the above. It is a great all rounded bike. My current KLR is a 94. It will run all day at interstate speeds, jump to a top speed of 96mph in a heartbeat, but I enjoy it most relaxed at ~60 on the backroads. She loves to run the hardpack at the hiway speeds, no problem. (55mpg)
