| I was looking at both of these bikes and decided on the 400. The 650 is cheaper because it is intended more for the road. It is a lot heavier than the 400. The way it was explained to me was the 650 is 90% road and 10% off road. The 400 is 50%road and 50% off road. The 400 has the same suspension as the KX dirt bike line. It has been rated extremely high in the 4 stroke catagory. If you plan to do some dirt riding the 400 is the only choice. If you want to mainly stay on the road the 650 is the way to go. I have the 400 and it is one bad machine. It does about 90 mph max speed. Your hands will go numb at speeds over 70. The 650 will handle interstate speeds with no problem but I wouldn't want to get it airbourne out in the woods. Good luck with your decision. Hope this helps. AC

| If I could get a 650 with KLX400's technology, I would buy it.
However the relality is the KLR650 is too dated when compared to the KLX400.
From brakes to suspension KLX400 is better unless planning a big road trip, The girth of the KLR650 would be better |

| The 400 is a Suzuki DRZ400S with green plastic. It came from the deal Kawasaki and Suzuki made in which they sell each others bikes to fill gaps in their line up.
The KLX400 does not have suspension anything like a KX, the KX is a MX bike the KLX400R is a trail bike (and a suzuki) The SR version is street and trail. Which means it will not perform as well as the R on the trail.
DRZ/KLX400 is newer technology then the 650 and a very popular bike but it depends what you are going to do with the bike. If you are going to ride in the street and occasionally ride a dirt road then the 650 is great. If you plan on getting a little more serious off road and doing trail riding then the SR would be ok. I wouldn't want to lug around the 650 through tight trails (though I have seen it done). But if you want mainly trails and want to ride on the road occassionaly consider converting an 400R to make it street legal. The setup will be much more offroad worthy. |

| KLX400SR vs KLR650, fornt fork size 49mm vs 38mm, fuel tank 2.6 gal vs 6.1 gal. Even through the KLX400 doesn't have those same front suspension as KX which has (46mm), but 3mm difference may do better or the worse.
