I have been looking at the Honda Shadow Spirit 750cc for a bike to ride, problem is i have only really ridden dirtbikes max (250cc). I am 17 years old, 5'7 160lbs. , anyways my dad doesnt want to get me a 750cc bike b/c he says its way to big. i honestly think getting anything smaller than a 750cc is a mistake.

The Shadow VLX is a 600cc and might be a nice compromise with your dad. Your earlier experience on dirt bikes should help you with the transition to riding a larger bike. If you haven't already, take the MSF course. Ride safe and sober. Good luck.

I own the VLX 600cc and I would suggest that this bike is a great alternative to the 750. I have had mine for 4 years, and, although I'm looking at getting a bigger bike now, it has served me well. It looks great and runs great. I have had no problems with it. I was a previous dirt bike rider also.

When I was seventeen I went from a 350 Yamaha street to a Harley 1200 Pan with a twelve inch extension. I weighed 175 at the time, and was five foot ten at the time. I now own a Honda Shadow Spirit 750. It can be done, I mean I did it, but it will be almost like learning all over again. Since you have only ridden dirt I suggest you get a smaller street bike, and see what you think of the street bikes. It would be ashame if you forked out all that money for a Shadow, just to find out you would rather have a car. Everyone wasn't born to ride bikes. My father thinks those who are must be idiots, but in my opinion there are only a few that are chosen, idiots or not, and I am glad to be one. I wouldn't spend a lot of money at first finding out if you are one of us. Start with a 350 street, and work up. It will save you skin off your hide, and money to. Trees don't pull out in front of you, cars do.

In February of this year I purchased my first bike an 03Honda NightHawk 250, after quickly getting bored with the bike last month (May) I traded that 250 in for the 03Honda Spirit 750 and wish I would have gotten the 750 to begin with as my first bike. The bike is great!! It is easy and fun to ride, very manuervable, and it doesn't feel nearly as much as it weighs (496lbs). If your dad is worried about the bike being too big. Just tell him, to contact me...I am a female 33y/o, 5'4", 118lbs and this bike is perfect for me. Hope this convinces your father that it is not too big for you! And as suggested previously, taking the MSF course if you hadn't is a very good idea. JUST BE SAFE!!!

Hi, I hope I can help. I have been on two wheel since age 12 and I now have 36 yrs experience on bikes. Here I think is the answer to you query. Going from dirt to street or highway is as different as night and day. I bet you have heard that one before! But to make it short car drivers must be looked at in a different way if you are going to ride on the street with them. Here it is, always assume they are after you! They are out to get you! Remember they have STEEL around them you dont! As for 750 size, If you can pick it up you can ride it! Thats very important!

Hello Wes. My husband and I have never driven mototcycles before. This spring we bought two bikes, mine is a 2003 Shadow Spirit 750. I am 5 feet tall and weight about 160 lbs. I was very intimidated with the size of this bike, but after a month or so practice it is a very manageable size and a great first bike for me. I just passed my exam for my bike license this morning and am thrilled with this bike. However, keep in mind the Honda Shadow VLX is a 600 cc bike, a bit smaller and maybe easier to run by your Dad.

Good luck!
