This bike is very durable, I have owned one for 3 years. There are a few things to change or replace before you do long riding. first, replace shift lever, it brakes and is too week. second replace radiator plastic attaching screws with lock nuts, other than that, there is a lot of accessories avalable to make the bike do what you want to do.

I spent an hour with a factory trained mechanic who owns a KLR himself. He swears by them (not to be confused with swearing at them).
Maintain the bike religiously and it will last you many years of solid service. The engine has been around a lot of years and has proven itself the world over for what it was designed to do. You may change certain things on it to suit your style or wants, but the stock bike will last as is.

It's been around for twenty years, almost unchanged. They got it right and buyers responded. It's a favorite of Adventure Touring outfits. Their bikes must be road and dirt worthy, (just keep the tires on the ground, it's no motocrosser!) dependable, easy to maintain, cheap to repair, light enough and of course, cheap enough. The KLR 650 just works. There are a few issues but nothing that can't be easily corrected. After twenty years of steady production and few changes, you'll find a wide range of aftermarket parts.
