How's this bike on the Hiway? Interested in Wisco to Rockies and down Rockies into Mexico. Heard BMW is the way to go for dual purpose ie;R650GS? Comments please

Its fine up to about an indicated 80 (maybe 74 true) and it gets there faster than most cars, about like a standard corvette. Above that it suffers the same problem as most other motorcycles--the wind and buffeting start to be serious issues. For short hops on freeways or long hops on any secondary road its great.

I had my KLR since 99. With about 20K on it around New Mexico I gotta tell you I would never take this bike on the long run. Unless you put something soft between your butt and the factory seat it will hurt you after the first couple hundred miles. However, it is also true that this is a very easy maintenance bike, that will give you thousands of miles of trouble free joy. Advice: important goodies to take with you: cable ties to tie down plastic body parts after you will lose some screws, extra clutch cable, spare screws, shifter lever. Good luck!

If you can afford a BMW, then get it. It blows the pants of the KLR in sheer creature comfort on long trips.
