I am seriously thinking of buying a Sportster or Roadster this spring, have not seen any difference except for gas tank size. Right now I am torn between the 1200 Harley or a (and forgive me please) Kawasaki Mean streak 1600. Both are the same price but I notice alot of people on the Kawasaki reviews comparing them to H.D.'s makes me wonder. Do Harley dealers haggle? I just started riding last year and bought a Vulcan750, great bike but now I want bigger ; ) Any suggestions would be great, I really love the Wide Glide but cannot afford that baby! Even the used ones are to much.. Thanks

Ron,you seem a bit obsessed with "SIZE",gas tank size, displacement size, bike size, and the size of your bank account. You know what they say about guys with big yachts? What happened with the Vulcan750 is going too happen with the Mean Streak or Sportster, you're always going to want something "BIGGER"(Boss Hoss???).Yes the Sportster carries the stigma of being a "girlie bike"(skirtster)or "just for beginners".But history tells us it is known as the fist of the "Superbikes",and still holds its place in that category today.Try to get over your insecurity and stay within your budget. The 1200 is plenty of bike, and good lookin'too.Someday when your budget allows get that Wide Glide you love, when you look back you won't regret owning a Sportster.

There are a lot of subtle differences in the two models. Go to the HARLEY-DAVIDSON website and there is an option of comparing the two bikes against one another. Also, the Harley will hold a good resale while the Kawasaki's resale value is gonna drop faster than Michael Jackson's pants when he's around young boys. I doubt the dealers will "haggle" but give it try. I would. All those metric owners that compare their bikes to Harleys wish they had bought a Harley to begin with. Even most of the "Polaris" (Victory) owners compare their scoots with Harleys. Give it up, boys.........

Thanks guys, I guess I will rent a sportster and see how I like it before buying one. I agree Harley's hold there value more although I am sure the Sportster does not hold quite as good as other models. I have seen dozens of Sportsters for sale pretty cheap, I am aware that pre 04 models had some reliability issues which may be why so many are trying to sell them. Anyway the search continues thanks for the help.

Ron, My sister-in-law bought a 2004 1200c last year and although she likes it a great deal she is already talking about moving up to a Low Rider. My brother has had his 2004 Harley Night Train for a year and also likes it very much although he has spent thousands of dollars on dealer modifications trying to get some power out it. I have been riding on the street since 1973 and last year when I went shopping for a new bike I did a lot of research and although I could have afforded a Harley I went with a 1000cc inline four Japanese Bike. Because of the image I really tried to like a Harley but every time I rode one I could not wait to get off it. I spend a lot of time visiting bike shops and reading about all makes and models of bikes and in my opinion the Kawasaki Mean Streak, in black, is the best looking V cruiser out there. When my brother who spends a lot of time in Harley shops went with me to a Kawasaki dealer to look for a dirt bike he stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the Mean Streak and said what a great looking bike it was. I just got done reading a review comparing the Honda 1800, the Yamaha Warrior, and the Kawasaki Mean Streak and the Mean Streak, although not as powerful as the other two bikes in the article, came out on top. I think you would be happy if you bought the Sportster but after a year, like the Vulcan 750 you will be looking for more. Good Luck!

Hi, To be completly honost with you, All bikes that are built by the uppers in the industry are all good operating machines. If you long for a Harley then you better buy a Harley. Buy the sportser its got more accesorries and more chrome that you will want in the future anyway. Dusty

I ride an 05 XL1200C Sporty and really enjoy it. The difference between the Custom and the Roadster is riding style. The motors are the same. If you want to ride aggresively in corners then the Roadster is for you. If you want comfort and style along with decent cornering ability the Custom is the ticket. The Mean Streak is a cool bike that will outrun either Harley on top end, but the resale value of any Japanese bike is poor compared to any Harley. After loosing money when trading in or selling Japanese bikes for 30 years I finally started buying Harleys and have been very, very pleased with the Harley's I have owned.
