| | My husband and I are looking for a small motorcycle for our RV. We will be traveling in Mexico so can only bring 2 motorized vehicles across the border (one per person). Our needs are: able to carry both of us (appx. 325 lbs) at speeds of at least 50 mph, can handle the many dirt roads of Mexico, and light weight. We're looking at the Suzuki DR200SE as well as the Yamaha XT225 and TW200. Any words of advice? |

| I have owned both bikes. A 2001 XT225 and a 2001 DR200SE. They are both good bikes. Plus for the XT- a little faster, 6 speed lightweight Minus slow to warm up in cold climates like Minnesota winters. Plus for the DR200SE Gas tank holds more gas! Easy to start no matter what. Minus only a 5 speed but something one can live with.
I weigh about 170lbs and have no problem hitting speeds ove 65 on either bike. I have gone 80+ on the yamaha and 70+ on the Suzuki (note I never tried to see how fast I could go on the Suzuki. I am assuming that either bike could get both of you around 50mph with no problem. I have had my wife on the back of the yamaha and had no problem going 50. If money isn't an issue consider the Suz Dr400. It's taller and probably heavier but a nice bike.

| | I own a 2007 DR200SE and a 2003 Yamaha XT225. Between the two, take the Yamaha...it has a 6 speed tranny and does better on the road than the Suzuki. Both are a toss up with weight and easy of riding. At 60-70 mpg, gas shouldn't be a worry. Both bikes are particularly comfortable for the long hauls, and consider 50mph to 55mph as a max cruising speed, certainly not a highway bike. I carry TWO of them on my motorcyle trailer hitch carrier with easy. One would carry well on the back of a camper trailer bumper. I also have a 10'x5' enclosed trailer that both bikes ride extremely well in. Don't forget your bulletproof vest, massive locks and M-16 in Mexico. They'd gladly take the bike from you. |
