I bought a 2nd hand BMW R1200c (98) and i really like it, but the gears seem extremely clunky and sometimes the first gear doesnt go in at all! I have to literally hammer it in or switch up and down to get it in. The gears seem to be very very sloppy. I recently tried a Vrod and i must say it pleasure shifting the gears and someitmes i didnt even know what gear i was in..thats how smooth it was. The R1200C is pissing me off a bit with its erratic gear feel. Any tips or similiar problems?

Hello Dennis.

With regards to your question on the BMW R1200C the gears are designed this way to ensure smooth overall performance and reliability. The gear ratio is very large which is why there is some 'play' in the gears. To shift, especially into first where you mention you have to 'hammer it' or shift up/down to get into first all that you have to do is 'feather' the clutch and then shift down and it will go very smoothly - just release the clutch slowly and shift down from neutral and it will work very well.

The gear ratio being as it is will ensure that your transmission/clutch assembly last a very long time in comparison to other models. I agree though, that the V-Rod is very smooth in how it transitions/shifts but this can lead to extra costs from a maintenance perspective.

Anyway, hope this helps. Happy riding.
