I have a 1979 GL1000 and find that it rides like a wagon, very rough! Is there something that can be done to give me a smooth ride?

First things first. It's a 25 year old motorcycle...
Now are they the original shocks and how many miles? If original and high mile get the progressive works shocks! If they are Progressives then look at what setting you have the spring rate set at. Also you have to consider that your weight could be a factor.
As for the front forks. Drain, clean and replace the fork oil. I'd suggest starting out with 10wt and see how you like it. The original fork spings are soft as butter and many owners replace(d) them with a set of Progressive springs that are far heavier.

Remember if you don't have a shop manual get one. Read it learn from it and follow directions.

as always CAVEAT EMPTOR!
