I have an '02 FXD. Overall, I'm very satisfied. I like to ride two up with my wife. I'm about 190lbs and she's about 120. We occasionally bottom out with the original standard rear shocks. I asked the parts salesman at the nearby Harley dealer what it would take to upgrade to something that we wouldn't bottom out so frequently. He said $500 (the price shocked me so much I don't recall what it was he was suggesting, but I'm guessing something like what comes on the rear of an FXDT). Is there a lesss expensive alternative that might work, like simple stiffer springs?

David, I don't know about other options but the fxdx/fxdxt rear shocks are 1/2" taller than the fxd shocks and fullt adjustable. They list for $499 in the Harley accessory catalog but if you order them from "Chicago Harley Davidson" (do a google search) you can get them for $399 as they sell all Harley parts at a 20% discount and minimal shipping charges. Took me a while to get a few items, others came right away .Very friendly to deal w/ on the phone.

I've got the same bike. With my wife and myself, we would also bottom out and once I even managed to scrape the frame under her footpeg on a turn. I went back to the dealer and had them tighten the shocks two turns for me. Granted, they said that newer shocks would be the best alternative and tightening the stocker would make it much more stiff for me riding solo, but they did it anyway and didn't charge me for it. Since that, no bottoming out. It worked like a charm. I'd tell you to do that first.

The stock shocks are cheap crap. Mine are shot too. Unfortunately, for a high quality set you are looking at around 4-5 hundred, but don't give it to your HD dealer. Buy them aftermarket. Harley doesn't produce them anyway, they just buy them and mark them way up!
