I bought my 1st bike , Kawasaki Ninja 500, in Nov 2007. Then after taking the motorcycle safety course, I bought my newest bike, 2007 Kawasaki Ninja 650R in April 2008. I'm concerned to know what is the proper break-in methods for this newer bigger bike. The manuals of both bikes say to not exceed 4000 rpm for the 1st 600 miles (1st maintenance/oil change), then not to exceed 6000 rpm up until 1000 miles have been passed. But the salesman told me the Ninja 650R actually only has one break-in period of limiting riding to 6000 rpm up through the 1st 600 miles of riding. So which method is correct, as I want my new bike to last as long as possible ? Also everything is still stock.

I saw your post and was hesitant to respond, only because this can be a controversial topic of discussion. Rather than talk about it, I'll include a couple of links below for you to read for yourself. I'll just say that I've been breaking in bikes for many years in a very similar way as is described, both street bikes and those that I once raced. I've had many high performance cars and did the same with them, always finding consistently the same exceptional results.

I learned from a friend who was a world-class Indy car & Nascar racer, who was also only a hair beneath the national championship level in motocross. I've followed his and his mechanics' break-in procedure ever since and it has always provided me with a bike that runs better, has more power and requires less maintenance than other identical makes and models. This is almost without exception. Once you read it, you then choose for yourself what you are most comfortable doing. I'll also say that this break-in procedure defies that which we read in the owner's manuals regarding almost all combustion engines made today.
