| Hi out there.....
I'm really wanting to buy a F 650 GS. For commuting and fun.
I'm hearing up to 60mpg. YES!
But......what about running it on regular fuel vs. premium?
I have a K1200LT that I have always run on REG. fuel. I don't hear it pinging.
So has anyone been running their 650 on Reg. Gas prices are just too high.....................
Thanks

| If the bike's compression ratio falls into the range that requires premium, then its bad for the motor to not have premium. I don't know your comp ratio, but compare it with other bikes and cars that run on premium, if its the same range, you may be taking a chance by using lower Octane. Lower octane can resist less compression than higher octane, so if you have a high comp ratio, lower octane will be more likely to fire earlier than the motor is designed for, not only causing knocking, but added wear and fatigue to the metals because the piston/shaft/flux capacator/etc., are not properly aligned at the time of forced motion. I googled 'compression ratio and octane' or something like that and saw generally
9.3:1 or less-regular
9.3-9.9:1-midgrade
10:1 or higher- Premium
Not scientific, but I did see numbers like that a few different places, some were forums, others were credible enough looking auto sites.
Keep in mind, if a bike could run well on less expensive fuel, the manufacturer and salesman would repeatedly tell you that. It would be a good selling point for any bike these days.
