I'm a beginner rider looking at starting bikes. I'm a burly guy, but I don't have an ego issue so I don't need to pack a liter and a half between my legs to make up for something. My main question is would the Rebel feel like an asthmatic beagle if I were to try to get above 40mph? I'm looking for something that could at least cruise at 65mph because I have to do a fair amount of freeway driving, and this might turn out to be my primary mode of transportation.

Re: Honda Rebel:

1st, it's a money spent and value received situation. If money isn't the issue altogether, then consider one of the following. If it is, spend some time looking for a 1-yr old model of the same bikes, all of which offer so much more value than the Rebel:
Kawasaki Vulcan 500LTD
Honda Shadow Aero 750
Yamaha V Star 650
Suzuki C50 (Fuel Injection)

For these same reasons, I wouldn't suggest that "adult" should begin by riding a 20" bicycle, rather than a full-size model. For an adult, that tiny bike won't give them much of an advantage. Plus, once they learn the basics, they'll absolutely be looking for a more appropriate bike. Well, same with a motorcycle, to a degree. Get one that is easy to maneuver, versatile, comfortable, dependable and safe. Each of these bikes above far outshine the Rebel by a huge amount. Anything less would drive you absolutely crazy within 4-6 months, especially if you plan on riding at all above 55 mph. Give them some serious consideration. You'll be glad you did. Do some research and compare them side by side, not taking any one person's opinion as what's best for YOU. Make that your decision. Good luck.

I am 6'1" and also weigh 275. I have a 2007 Rebel and a 2003 V-Star Classic 1100 ccs. I enjoy the Rebel in town more than the V-Star. I would never consider taking the Rebel on a long trip, but in commuting 34 miles a day, it has no problem.
