My 2002 GTX DI had a sudden decrease in speed and RPM's. So far this year I've had a new battery installed, replaced the rectifier, and replaced the started relay. After all that I had it back in the water for about ten minutes, then suddenly the speed dropped from 47 or so to 24 -25 mph. Also the RPM's dropped, but only to about 5250. So the engine is working hard, but the out put (speed) isn't there. I ma confused and concerned 'cause I don't really want to spend anymore money, unless I have to...

Hello. I have the same year/model jetski as yours. The battery and starter relay likely have nothing to do with your performance loss. Things to check:

- ensure you're using the (normal) Yellow key and not the (Learning) white key (obvious, but sometimes overlooked)
- check the impeller for damage/nicks/etc
- ensure that the impeller doesn't have rope, string or line wrapped around it (look up thru the intake grate with a flashlight)
- remove both spark plugs and check for fouling (the insulators should be dry and milky white in color) if either plug is wet or crusty black, it's not firing properly.
- use only Premium 91+ octane Fuel (not 87 or 89)
- use only Bombarier XPS or XPS-II synthetic injection oil
- rev limit is 7200 rpm and you should be at/near it on flat water

You MUST change the plugs in this engine (for some reason) every 25-40 hours!!! I didn't change mine soon enough, and I lost a single cylinder completely one day and had similar symptoms as you. It was only firing on one cylinder and I could only go about 25-30mph.

REPLACE THE PLUGS (they're cheap) and will probably fix your problem - use NGK ZFR4F (DI models) or NGK BR8ES (non DI models).

If the above doesn't fix the problem, take it to an authorized Bombarier Service Facility and have them check the codes. It might be something inexpensive to fix.

Hope this helps.
