| Ok here is a little help for ya.
First off what you want to do isnt asking all that much, but dont forget that there is more to being fast than power, and you will need a suspension to handle the speed you want to go at, and also a rider who knows some things too
Just basic intake and exh mods make a real difference (not just this model either) and the earlier advice on the K&N is really good, but be sure to run a prefilter if your area is dusty or wet and keep it clean and well oiled (that way you prevent 99% of the trouble people report with them).
Far as the exhaust goes pick a decent silencer with a reverse cone and pull your stock header and grind down the internal welds where the pipe attaches to the end pipe where it mounts up to the head.
There is gains to be had from a good aftermarket header, but until you do a lot of build up on the engine all they will do reduce your cash, and maybe some of the torque output.
If your trying to keep up or pass these others at top speed then do yourself a favor and find some turns and rougher terrain because that is where the great balance of the EX will have an advantage. I dont like the taller gearing and without some additional engine mods it can really bog down the acceleration of the machine, and make low speed stuff tougher etc.
One thing you really have to do if you want peak performance is to make sure that your not losing any of the power you should have now to leaking valves or a worn piston ring to cyl wall etc. Doing an easy compression or better yet including a leak down test will tell you what your dealing with, and if there is enough wear to be of concern you would see the most gains from freshening up the piston and cyl.
Guess you could also consider a larger bore and higher compression if there is any cyl or piston problems, and that will make a serious difference (should be in combo with the in and exh mods).
There is plenty of power to be had from this engine, and though it has limits (and more of them than some of the newer stuff) if done right it can be a really nice package of handling, power, and safety.
One thing to consider though is that if your intending on going full tilt you may want to look into a different model. Most of the newer 450's give you a lot more from the start, and though the 400 can be made to perform similar etc its going to cost you more, and will not compare to putting the same $$$ into say a 450r or yfz450 etc.
So choose your mods carefully, make sure they work together and go enjoy your ride!! |
