I can't answer for the rest of the world (Aprilia is doing quite well with the Pegaso overseas) but in the US, the answer is quite simple, but in multiple parts:

1) US has been and is in the midst of a Cruiser Craze. If it ain't a throbbing V-Twin with tons of chrome, Low slung, long and a wallowing pig in the curves, then it ain't the latest fad. Don't get me wrong, I love cruisers, but the Pegaso they ain't.

2) Aprilia is an exotic. There are only so many dealerships in the US, and they are mostly near metropolitin areas, not out in the sticks. If you break down, you are on your own. Nobody can hear you scream in War Eagle, WV.

3) America is in love with quixotic, large, throbbing engines that sport cc's like designer lables. 650 cc's used to be a BIG BIKE. A 650 cc Single with dual carbs, radial valve head, duel exaust, twin oil pumps, Gesel coated engine...on and on and on...would impress the hell out of any true gear head. The power that cranks out of this bike is truly amazing, though the numbers on paper won't quite impress anyone when compared to an 1800cc VTX or 1602 Road Star, or a 1300 FJR.

As for why BMW sells this model so much better? Way more dealerships...and a very old, well known name for one. It's easy to get parts, with easy name recognition.

Also, BMW knows how to outfit a bike. Heated hand grips, plug and play outlets, engine guards, sturdy hand guards, FI (well, crappy FI anyway), really nice and usable side luggage. The list just goes on and I'm jealous of the support this bike gets compared to the Pegaso. But, a better bike it ain't.

Lastely, it's the least expensive BMW. For those who want to own a proper BMW, but just can't swing the payments for a full blown model, here ya go.

Because USA roads are too straight for the most part, speeds high, and distances great which does not suit this bike well. If you live in the mountains with lots of twisties they are really fun. These bikes do sell well in Europe for this very reason. THe distances and straights are short and the terrain generally twisty and mountainous. A high premium is put on handling not top speedthere. Americans are generally dumb consumers anyway. How else do you explain the proliferation of Harleys....a terrible motorcycle.
In regard to BMW f,s
they sell better because they have a better dealer network and more care is taken in their assembly. They also tend to be a 2nd bike for a BMW owner rather than a primary bike. You are correct that they are ugly. My 2 cents worth...
