I have a 2006 1300R. Awesome bike! I highly rcommend it! There is a slight clunk when shifting into 2nd but it is barely noticable to me. I believe it is there to let you know whether or not you are in neutral, as opposed to 1st or second, since neutral is between these two gears. I actually find it somewhat helpful. I don't always notice the neutral light indicator trun on. The later versions of this bike 2005-up are not as bad as the earlier versions. Before 2005 the clunk was much more significant. I think Honda toned down the clunk noise after all of the complaints. I've owned this bike for 5 months and have put 5,000 trouble free miles on it so far.

Check your speed when shifting after going throught the motor cycle safety course (require by the military) I learned that the speed at which you shift increases or decreases the noise. The faster your going the louder the "Clunk". The owners manual is nice but only for down shifting. Try Up shifting to 1st no faster than 10MPH and Downshifting no faster than 7mph. It works for me and I've been riding for over 20 years. Godd Luck and Ride for Fun. Mike

I test rode a dealers showroom model vtx1300r, It was a great ride and very smooth shifting, I decided to purchase a VTX-1300R but of a differant color and mine was still in the shipping crate, once I took delivery it all went down hill..still trying to work things out with dealer. Im still a huge Honda fan, (I loved my 2005 750 shadow)....just waiting for Honda to show me some love..

I have a 2006 vtx 1300r with about 4000 miles on it and the only thing I don't like is the clunking when shifting from first to second. Mine is so loud I am embassed. People 2 blocks away must hear when I go from first to second. I have tried slow and fast accelleration as well as hard shift and soft shifts, still too loud. RAS
