my friend wants to buy a harley as his first bike later on in life (we r still in high school). I tell him its a bad idea to start out on a 800+ cc bike. That he should start out on a 500 or maybe 600cc. Can you guys help me convince him to not get a harley as his first bike?
Thanks

The Harley 883 is a great bike and I hope to own one someday. However I am only two months into motorcycling. I bought a Yamaha Virago 250cc motorcycle. I am 6'2 and weigh 235lbs. This is plenty of bike for me. We have a desire in this country to always own something better or larger than we really need. So the common advice is to buy the biggest or the best. Well the Virago is not the biggest but it is one of the best beginner/commuter bikes on the road. A 500cc or 600cc are good bikes too,(Honda Shadow, Buell Blast, etc.). But in all honesty the Virago has a higher seat height than the Shadow
and is more comfortable for a large person.

My Virago has saved me on a couple occassions. It is light, and nimble and is easy to recover when you make a mistake. A Sportster with 54 horsepower is a bike that if you make a mistake, is not going to be as forgiving. Take a corner wrong, need to make a panic stop, and the power will work against a new rider. You are wise to tell your friend to try something smaller first.

The current 883 weighs 583 pounds wet. That is a lot of weight if you start to lose your balance. You would be far better off to start with something lighter, easier to heave around and handle at low speeds.
