I am considering buying a Arctic Cat Bear Cat Wide Track 660 4 stroke. I would like to tour and to ride wilderness trails. I would like to haul some load of wood and to travel to and from my cabin. My son also would like to tour with some of his friends. Is this machine fast enough to keep up with touring machines of the 600 2 stroke class? Is is a good work and off trail machine as well. Is there a better machine for what I am asking?

I live in North Eastern Alaska. The coldest part of Alaska. And, depend on my machine for hauling wood, hunting, and transportation. I have had this machine for two winters now. It's been petty terrific.
So, far it has two down sides. 1. Since it's a four-stroke it can't start when it's cold. I won't take it anywhere it can't be heated (or plugged in) when it's below -15 F. It will actually statr at -20, but I won't overnight (just in case it drops to -40 F I don't want to walk 50 miles) 2. If you tip it over it's difficult to flip back over (it weighs over 700 lbs.) I've flipped it and had to get a tree with a 4 in base, about 10 ft. long to pry it back up right.
That's the bad news. The good news is that it hauls a mother load of wood.
I have hauled at least 900 lbs of wood through pretty deep snow, and it doesn't struggle. If you are on a packed trail it's even better. It even pulls wood up inclines without any problems. You can haul an entire moose out of the woods (on a sled).
It only goes about 60 MPH. So, you can't keep up wit friends who want to go 90 MPH. But, if they'll stay in the 40-50 MPH range you'll be ok. My daughter has an Arctic Cat Z 440 LX and she leaves me in her dust any time she chooses.
Lastly, it's dependable, great fuel consumption, it's quiet (a plus if you are hunting with it), it can carry three people (two adults & one child) if needed comfortably, and you can pull the back seat off and have a huge storage area for long trips to the trapline.
