I recently purchase a used 02 that was maintained by the dealer. I noticed it had a popping noise similiar to what you have described during the test drive but when he drove it I didn't hear anything and he claims there were never any noises that he is aware of and he seemed pretty sincere about it. I bought it anyway b/c it was cheap enough and I had him sign a contract giving me several days to have it inspected and I would return it if there was something major. Turns out the dealer that did the service on it hadleft out a washer that costs appr. $5 and the popping noise was due to it trying to engage in 4 wheel drive. It only did it in four wheel drive. Don't know if this is your problem or not but noone else sent any answers so there you have it.

had a similar noise. Just took it in, dealer thinks it may be a u-joint in the front drive shaft.
