I had a fork brace installed on this bike. The steering shimmies at 75-80mph now. I'm not sure whether the bike did this before I got the fork brace. Does the KLR 650 normally shimmy at these speeds or might this more likely be a problem with the installation of the fork brace? Any thoughts?

This model is typically very smooth & stable. Possibly the fork brace is causing the forks to bind. I would try to loosen the axle first, then losen & retighten the fork brace, collapse the forks a few times (as much as possible) and then retighten the axle last. Take your time & enlist the help of a friend, and make sure that ALL bolts are tightened to factory torque specs. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN any of the bolts! This can cause more binding. Good luck!

My guess is that your steering head bearings need to be inspected and most likely adjusted. Also pay close attention to the condition and inflation of your tire. Of course...the fork brace could be installed incorrectly too. Good luck!

The fork brace shouldnt cause the problem you've described! Check front wheel allignment and balance! Mine have been prone to getting out of ballance and the wheels coming out of true very easily! If it is, find a good tecnician to true your wheel and then rebalance the whole wheel and tire! Also, check the tire and tire pressure! I've had two KLR's now, and with the immense knowledge of my local dealer (whom Ive grown up with and who happens to be the "oldest franchised Kawasaki dealer in the nation") Have had few problems with a KLR! The majority of problems I've seen have more to do with the lack of proper maintenance, or outright abuse on the part of owners! Goodluck! Enjoy the bike!!

I have a 1996 KLX650r (dirt version), and my friend had the dual sport version. I can't remember any steering shimmies at any speed.
