| Hey everybody I need a little help with a sound im hearing from my engine. When I'm cruising down the road and let off the throttle I hear a cliking noise coming from the engine. If it were a car i would say it sounds like a loose lifter. On occation i can here it at an idle though not all the time. This bike only has 1600 miles on it and it seems as though it has only started doing it recently. I have taken it to the dealership but they say they cant here it. any info you might have would be greatly appreciated.

| I ride a 2001 1100 Spirit, and the sound I hear when coming off the throttle is a slight clunk from the drive shaft, which I believe is normal. Perhaps, that's what you're hearing. You also mentioned that sometimes you hear it at idle, so that would eliminate the drive shaft. If you solve the problem, please post it. I love my Spirit, but I'm stepping up to a touring machine and hope my next ride is as good as the Spirit

| I have a 1999 spirit with 10600 miles.
I have heard the ticking too but read in an artical that they all do it to some extent. Something to do with the lifters.Causes no problems. You may try some louder pipes.
Sure helped mine to brethe better.
Had it up to 120mph. WoW!

| The dealership is going to tell you that they cant hear it.Mine is so loud I can hear it above my vance&hines pipes.I only have 2600 miles on mine and it started out when new. All we can do is start complaining to Honda. It is a honda trait and they should have fixed it years ago. Bad lifters is what i was told. it is a bad desighn and it should be fixed.

| I believe the clicking sound, which I also hear in my 2000 Spirit 1100, is from the design of the lifters. However I don't think it is a "bad" design. I think the lifters are like the "fast bleed" lifters that some companies like Rhoads (sp?) make for cars. Their advantage is that they bleed down at low RPMs (ie at relatively low oil pressure). This means that a relatively "hot" cam can be used. When the lifters bleed down at low rpm it gives the vehicle the improved vacuum and low end torque that a "milder" cam would give. When the lifters pump up at higher rpm / oil pressure it gives the improved mid-range torque that the "hotter" cam is used for. It kind of gives the best of both worlds. My previous bike, a 1995 Vulcan 88, also ticked at idle and I think it used similar lifters.
