| Oil Usage-- My Sabre has 4000 miles on it and I just found out, after going on a long cruise with a groop, that it is burning oil. This happens when I down shift. I do know that I use about a quart every 3 months. Is this normal for the milage on the engine?

| Are you reading your oil level correctly according to the manual? If your burning oil you would smell it let alone see some evidence of this somewhere. Check your sparkplugs for fouling. Hope this helps...

| I always make sure the bike is level when reading. What is puzzling, I pulled each plug and check them, all clean. Also, I have reved the motor and there is no smoke what so ever. Everything looks clean.

| First off: Don't let anyone tell you that this is "normal." I have a 2004 Sabre with about 12,000 miles. It has not burned a drop of oil between any of the 4,000 mile service operations. I have heard similar comments as yours made by other Sabre owners. When all is said and done, in many/most (all?) of the cases of which I am aware, it is attributable to faulty break-in, non-OEM accessories (e.g., pipes), etc. You noted observation of oil loss when you downshift. Are you matching RPM's after you downshift? I suspect not. You might want to add a tach to help recognize shift points. If you are not keeping RPM's near constant while downshifting), you are stressing powertrain components and creating issues. Oil under pressure has to go somewhere: leak v. consumption. If no leak and you have blue smoke when you downshift, the oil may be getting past the rings and is being burned in the cylinders. If you have blue smoke only at start up after bike sat, it may be oil seals. If you have white smoke and also coolant loss, it may be head gasket/cracked block. Best to speak to a pro. Good luck.

| I agree with Jerry. I have had my 2001 for four summers now and have not noticed any use of oil. I have about 12,000 miles on it.
