I am considering trading my 1997 BMW R1100GS for a new KLR 650. I have to pay about 1500dollars on top of it but at least I will have a new bike. Do you think this will be wort while?
Thanks.

Have not owned a 1100GS, so no comment on that. Moved from a Vmax to my KLR. MIssed the raw power from the max, but sure wouldn't mistaken that for a dual sport machine! Cheap, simple maint, plus great gas mileage. NB: trying to get used to the 'thumping' characteristics of a big single though.. Overall, not too shabby for a bike at this price (if you're 5'10" or taller, that is)

If you want the KLR to do what the GS did, and to the same ability, forget it. The KLR will be new but not the same machine you had in the BMW. Apples and Oranges my friend.
The KLR will be lighter and more nimble and easier in the bush but on the highway, it will not come close in comfort, power, and speed.
Take one for a test ride if you haven't already. You will notice a huge difference.
Just ask yourself what you want to be doing most of the time with a bike. If yuo want a cheap commuter with off-road abilities, then the KLR will work.
IF cross-country touring wiht some off-road adventure touring is what yuo will be doing, then the BMW will deliver better.
I have seen guys do huge long-distance riding on KLR's and seen guys on BMW GS's get into thick bush and stuff as well but just because some riders are willing to do some extreme things with these bikes, doesn't mean the bikes do them well.
A KLR is not a new and equal replacement for the GS. THE KLR has its strengths on shorter commutes on pavement and longer commutes on fireroads, logging roads and trails. The BMW is more the opposite.
Now a more suitable replacement for your BMW would be the KTM 950 Adventure!! Check it out!

Faith it seems that you are thinking of doing what i did a year ago.i had an 1150 gs and traded for a klr and have no regrets at all.Maintenance is a breeze.only one question to ask yourself;do i want speed or a simple life.
