I really appreciate all the input on this website, now to my question(s). I'm new to riding, in fact I've never ridden, heck, I've never shifted any manual transmission. I'm not sure exactly why,(maybe because I'm at the age where I want to have fun) but I've decided I'm going to learn how to ride, get a sports bike, have fun, and love doing it. What I want to do is find a good starter bike, learn to ride it well, and get a feel for what it's all about. I am positive I'm getting a bike, now the hard part is to decide which one. I'm 6'2, and 200 lbs. I like the Buell's, and I realize I would start with a "Blast." From what I read they're good starter bikes. However, I've read mixed reviews about the Firebolt XB-9R (because of my size, I guess it's not the best??) I know I wouldn't start with a Firebolt, because I'm not rich, and not in any rush to speed up the dying process, but ultamitly it is what I want, (When I learn to ride well.) ::My Delema:: - Whatever brand of bike I start on, I would like to stay on as I work my way up the Motorcycle food chain. Can anyone point out some other good bikes (starters, and high-end). Anyway's thanks for the tip's.

Richard

Richard, without any previous riding experience I'd stay away from the 12R. The 12 is a very powerful bike and will get away from you if you are not careful. I've had my '02 12R since last fall and love it, but I've been riding since bikes since I was 7 years old ( now 40). Personally, I'd start with a 600 series, you pick the flavor, i.e., Kawa, Yamaha, Suz, etc., all have their strong and weak points and I doubt any would disappoint you. I have a friend that rides a 01 ZX-6R. He's 6 2" and a solid 250, the bike still flat out rips when you get on the throttle. If you are set on a 12R, take it real slow at first and follow the break in RPMs, they are as much for you as they are for the motor, IMHO. Email me if you have any questions on the 12. Ride safe.

Thank you Scott for your advice, I'm definitely not going to get an R12 for my first bike, I don't have the money, and I'm not in any rush to find out what road rash feels like. I appreciate it.

Hi Richard, I agree with Scott. Stay away from liter + bikes for a few years. The 12r is crazy fast!! 200lbs, 300lbs. No matter. This bike could care less how big you are.
Any 600 series bike would be great to start on and it will take you a long way down the road...not slow I might add.
Mark (Kawa vet for 28 years)
BTW: Unless are an extremely gifted and crazy rider, the big 4 from Japan will take you as fast as you will ever want to go without spending a fortune.
