I keep hearing about the high maintenance cost of Ducati's as a result of the value adjustments. On 2004 bikes is that a real issue? My ST3? a monster?

Have yet to buy my ST3, but was told by the dealer that currently the manual calls for valve adjustments every 6k miles. He said that when the new manual for the 3 valve desmo comes out, it will ask for it every 12k. Don't know if this is true or not, but certainly would be nice. The 6k service runs about $550 from what I'm told.

IIRC, the manual calls for a valve clearance *check* very 6 thousand miles. I've been told that doesn't necessarily mean an adjustment, which are not that common from what I've heard. YMMV

Valves of all Ducati bikes settle in with miles. After adjustment once or twice, they shouldn't need to be touched until you reach silly miles. I know a few ST4s riders who haven't needed a valve adjustment in 40,000+ miles.

Duc owners are typically pretty picky and do what they can of their own mx. I have a guy who I let do my valves, but that's after I have the fairings off and ride it in stripped. Everything else is really easy to do, once the fairings are off. Those are by far the biggest pain in the butt. Buy a service manual.
