My son is getting ready to get a new motorcycle in a year or so and we are torn between to bike and were helping that some of you out there could help us. We would like to know some comparisons between the new R-1 and GSXR 750. Which one is faster, top speed and better quartermile time, and which one has the best handeling. He will be using this bike for some touring also. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

How much has your son been riding? If he rode dirt bikes and thinks he can ride street bikes, quite simply he is dead wrong. Even the most powerful dirt bike is 1/3 of a 750 or 1/4 of a liter bike. If he wants to tour, get him a good chiropractor since neither of these bikes are comfortable after about an hour. Since I think you posted ths on the VFR Q and A board, I assume you were looking at this bike. Here's the facts - the VFR is 80% of a Gixer or an R-1 on the track. Unless you have a death wish for your son, you shouldn't be asking about top speed. Any of these bikes can go 150 miles per hour, just a matter of how crazy the rider is. Same goes for quarter mile times. Unless your son is devoted on posting 10.8 second slips rather than 11.5 or 12 second ones with almost any other more "sane" motorcycle, go with something a bit more forgiving. Handling is comparable on all of these bikes, really just a matter of personal preference.
Don't get me wrong, Gixers and YFR's are great bikes on the track, but unless you are a devoted speed-a-holic or commute only several miles per day, go with something more street rather than track oriented.
