the gs500 doesnt have a gas meter, you have to use the trip meter, it is really annoying when first get the bike, but when you start riding and find your mpg it will be easier. On my gs500 without taking it past mid range rpm i can get 200 miles on 1 full tank. Always check your gas tank before riding, and reset the trip meter every time you refill. It holds 5 gallons, and does around 40 mpg depending on how you ride. theres always the reserve when you run out, and when you do out the lever back to the regular position so you dont run on your reserve. any questions ask me at thrillez@hotmail.com

The tank holds 5 gallons, the reserve is one of them (reserve is same tank, just switching the lever makes it drain from a different point). So you ride with the level on the regular tank, and when the level starts to drop below the sucking point and the bike starts to sputter (doesn't really sputter, but you will feel a loss of power as the gas level dips slightly below the drainage point) you simply reach down and flip the lever to reserve. You now know you have approximately 1 gallon left, which at about 50 mpg can get you to a pretty distant gas station. Just make sure you switch it back to the regular setting when you fill up, or you won't get the 1 gallon warning and you can run it dry....
