I'm going to be taking my motorcycle safety class at the beginning of August and have been reading about and looking at new bikes for once the training is over. I've read the forums and looked at most of the Japanese bikes (I confess) due to price point for power.

I would LOVE to get a Harley...believe me. I was in Gettysburg a coulpe of weeks ago and loved all of the Harleys I saw. The Sporster 883 is just too small compared to something like the V Star bikes. And the V Stars are less expensive. I'm not here to argue about quality of the HDs but I've read alot about mechanical problems etc.... This is why I'm hesitant to buy a used HD (w/out warranty). Can somebody who bought a Harley tell me why they decided to go w/ the American great over the V Star or something similar??? I just read on a forum that the V Star 650 is faster than the 883 but the V Star is a "girly bike". I take all of that talk lightly and can get a chuckle out of it for sure. I'm just hoping maybe somebody can recommend the best HD for me under $7,500.

I weigh about 260 and don't really want a bike that I will tire of in a short amount of time. I've also am just learning to ride (which is another reason I'm hesitant to buy a beaut of a HD and drop it...LOL). Its alot to digest but I'm just looking for some thoughts. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

If you go on the internet and look at what the experts recommend for new riders. You will find that they recommend getting a used small bike, something cheap and small, say a used 250 honda rebel. Then practice, practice, practice in a big parking lot or some large open space before ever getting on the highway. Thats after you take the riding course. They say its not a matter of if you will drop your bike its a matter of when and how many times. If you buy a new high priced bike your are going to be sick when you lay it down. Another thing they say is that most serious accidents happen in the first 6 months. Don't become a statistic. Be safe, do it right. Don't get on these busy highways until you have at least 6 months experience. Read the articles on the internet. When you become a good rider then go out and buy your dream bike. A man you size should probably not buy a Sportster. Although I have a 1200R and I love it. If you are on a budget, and can't afford a big Harley, something like the new Yamaha vstar 1300 might be a good choice for you. You will save a few thousand and have a very nice bike that will carry you a passenger and luggage with ease. Be safe, not sorry.
