Tough Call! Both are great. You would probably save a several thousand by getting an 05.You are in Cali so try Irv Seever. They have been around for years and their service is excellent going the extra mile for touring riders. If distance is not a problem then I have had great experiences with BMW of Fort Worth Texas,Lone Star BMW of Austin,BMW of Oklahoma. You could get a Southwest Airlines ticket and fly to Austin and Ride it home.Price wise I have seen great deals promoted by BMW of Orlando on Ebay. Most Dealers will price match so if your goal is price point then you can try going between dealers

I had a chance to buy an 05 R1200RT and save about $1000.oo to maybe $1200.00. But the Dealer was 220 miles from where I live. So I just bought an 06 from my local Dealer. I'm a big believer in supporting your local dealer. This bike is very high tech, and your going to need your Dealer much more than the older BMW's. Only your Dealer can bleed the brakes and that needs to be done every two years, you'll also need him to adjust your fuel injection, and trouble shoot systems with equipment you and I don't have. You can change your oil and adjust the valves, and change and balance your own tres but thats about it. If you want to balance your own tires contact beemer balancers. He has a very neat setup for about $93.00. Ordering and balancing your own tries will save you big bucks, and your wheels will not get beat up. My 1200 is due in this week, I can't wait.

If you are keeping it for the long haul, just go for the best price. They are the same machine. I have 20,000 on an '05 and love it for long distance riding. It, however, isn't the best bike for a steady diet of 'round the town riding since it is heavy. With the right seat and shield configuration you can easily do 1,000 mile days. I've done my share.

Safe riding.

Cheers,

Vince
