| Just took delivery of a new 2006 leftover VTX 1300R, Bike wont stay running at anything less than 50% choke even after a five to ten minute warmup..Bike spews black exhaust and backfires as soon as you attempt to ride it...Dealer say's I fouled the spark plugs..??
I rode a KX-125 dirt bike for 7 years and a Shadow 750 for 2 years before purchasing this bike, I think I know how to start the bike and ride..Has anyone any suggestions..?
Dealer says they will get to me in a few weeks to look at my three week old bike with 90 miles on it...Should I wait or try something myself..? |

| I have the exact same problem to the T. Just purchased a silver 1300R with two whole miles on it. The fella stated that the engine will take some time to "break in" and it will probably ride a little rough until it warms up. Understandable. However I'll warm the engine with roughly 50% choke anything less will stall it out when idle. When the engine is nice and hot, I can close the choke and it idles fine...
Yesterday evening is when I became concerned. Had it idling per normal with a semi open choke, crank the throttle every now and then when I'm hearing the engine start to sputter out, after about 5-7 mins get ready to head on home from dinner, crank the throttle, POOF, big ole could of sooty exhaust. After that my ride home was plagued with stall outs and rough/bubbling riding.
Crank out the "Owner's Manual", my symptoms are there, Rich Fuel Mixture "SEE YOUR HONDA DEALER". Now, I myself am not sure if I can manipulate something to where it I can fix it to adjust the flow, or if I should visit my local Honda guy...Not sure if Honda had a bad batch, but I find it's odd we have the exact same problem.
Any help would be great! |

| | Well...I pulled my spark plugs and they were fouled big time, I cleaned them with a fine wire brush, rode my bike to the honda dealer and told them to fix my bike or keep it...One week later they called me and said they couldnt find anything wrong with the bike and come pick it up. When I did the bike was running fine, I think they changed the plugs. in the past two weeks I have only rode abput 100 miles, they bike seems to be using a rich fuel mixture becasue as I am riding Im always smelling gas, bike is runnong ok at this time but at the 600 mile point it needs to go back to dealer for it's first tune up...I will tell them at this pint they need to show me on Honda's tech manual that my timing and fuel jetting are correct. I paid 9 grand for a bike I dont feel comfortable leaving twon on for fear of something else going wrong..good luck and keep me posted |

| I onw a 2006 VTX 1300s that now has just over 11,000 miles on it.
It's had ONE set of plugs and it really didn't need those, but since they were already out...
My starting procudure works like this:
Pull the choke ALL-THE-WAY-OUT, Start the bike, WALK AWAY, as in go put your Gear On and Get ready to ride! This WILL NOT HURT the Bike. I normally let mine run this way 3, 4, even 5 FULL minutes, depending on the Outside Temp, and how long it takes me to find all my junk!
By Pulling the Choke ALL-The-WAY-OUT you step up the the idle to a point where the engine won't DIE or FOUL the Plugs. This is the way Carburetors Work! To do otherwise is asking for problems - No Such Thing as 1/2 Choke! that doesn't do anything but FLOOD the engine with gas that it CAN'T Burn! |

| | One other Note: Always Buy a Premium Brand of fuel, not premium, but a Premium Brand of fuel… and you won’t find it at your local grocery store… |

| My 2006 VTX1300R does the same thing (stalls out when cold, etc) UNLESS I follow the same start procedure with the choke wide open for several minutes. I have had the bike for about 2 months and have about 2600 miles on it. I am leaving in a few days for a 2000+ mile trip and am not at all worried about it stranding me. Maybe pull and replace the plugs and try it this way and see if it doesn't help.
Good luck! These bikes are one helluva nice ride... |
