| I've been riding for over 25 years and I'm leaning towards a getting a new scoot. My pop's had HD's, some of my buddies have HD's, but I have yet to be indoctrinated into the "brotherhood"... which I've always scoffed at because I'm SICK of seeing posing pinheads walking around wearing every stinking Harley accessory they could buy at the dealership giftshop. ...But, damn if I don't dig the sound and feel of those two big jugs (cylinders, I mean); and the name "Harley Davidson" is, frankly, a very seductive marketing tool that HD has used to the fullest, god bless 'em. But, to put it short, I'm still a skeptic as to the reliability and value of HD's. Any comments from those of you who have owned one for more than a couple years & have a few miles on the odo? I realize they're much better w/ the intro of the Evo motor (I won't even mention the AMF days... sorry), but I read all these reviews of how everyone "loves their new HD" and then proceed to go on about all the changes they've made to give the thing more power, reliability, and comfort. That's hundreds if not thousands of $'s on top of the $12-15K that was just paid to chug out of the dealership parking lot with it! OUCH! Obviously, there are foreign makes (ok, ok... JAPANESE)that are historically more reliable, better performing, and a bigger bang-for-the-buck right off the showroom floor w/ little or no additional mods needed. But of course, even with all the advantages, they don't say "Harley D" on the tank. There's a LOT of soul and heritage in that name and there are many, many people willing to pay for it. A guy I know just bought a $2,000.00 Tag Heuer watch he's always wanted and it's already been in the shop. Damn thing's losing time, don'tchyaknow. My 10 year-old $100 Seiko's still kicking ass though. I think what this ultimately means is - get what you friggin' want even if you know there might be a more practical or logical choice. Some A-hole terrorist could fly a jet into your house tonight; and then where would you be? Right. Thanks for your help and sorry for this hot-air diatribe.
I'm getting a Harley. But I'm NOT going to be a walking billboard for them! |

| You certainly have a lot to say. I think you are missing the point! Riding a Harley is doing your own thing. Why are you judging people by what they wear? I am sure that they do not judge you.
I have been riding since the time you could pick up a good used bike for $2k. It was alot of money then, just like $15k is alot of money now.
Either buy the bike or don't, but at least do your own thing and quit worrying about everyone else.

| I gotta say I kinda have the same sentiments about being a Walking Billboard for H.D. but ya gotta take a good look at the type of people wearing all the Harley signs and clothing accessories, for the most part they are people who are into vanity and drawing attention to themselves, ,,it isn't really about the sport of motorcycling it is about showing off that you have the most expensive toy's money can buy, you find the same thing in every phase of their lives,They own a show off car they own or lease a fancy penthouse apt. etc.etc, But then again there are quite a few of us who look for practicality, I bought my 2001 FXDXT because ya can't find a more manuverable bike with large luggage capacity, clean up time is less than half that of all other bikes due to lack of ugly Chrome, I enjoy finding out what is so interesting down the road whether it be dirt or paved, can navigate just about any type road on the FXDXT. at 30,000 miles I switched from Conventional Harley oils to AMZOIL and this may have been a mistake, the bike now is showing light oil consumption, ((no leaks)) and it is difficult to shift into neutral with engine running.
Synthetic oil does not smoke. I also switched my wifes bike, 1996 Honda 1100 Shadow ACE to the Amzoil and it is doing fine with no signs of consumption.
You will enjoy your new Harley I am sure, just do not get caught up in the Vanity thging. |

| | You need to buy your own Harley and relax a little bit. Take a deep breath. After a week on your bike you will understand what the big deal is all about. It is not something that anyone can explain to you. You have let life pass you by long enough. And remember-relax! |
