| I don't know. During the break in period, the first 500 miles, I actually got a little over 60mpg while keeping it under 4000 rpm as per the owner's manual instructions for break in. I use regular 87 octane gas, and spend most of my commute time in the 65 to 70 mph range after I got it broke in. I'm going out on a limb here, but I have read something about different types of gasoline being available in different parts of the country. You being in CA, maybe the type of fuel used in that state to help keep hydrocarbon emmissions down, may not provide you with the milleage the fuel I get in KY allows me. It's hard to believe that it would make a 10mpg difference, but other than that I don't know what else it could be.

| OH yea, also check your tire pressure and make sure they are properly inflated. Under inflated tires will make a dramatic difference in gas mileage on a motorcycle.

| O.K. After doing some reading I've found out that your California bike, being equiped with CA emmissions, is the problem. Your bike is loaded down with all sorts of emmissions junk the 49 state model I have isn't equiped with. I bet mile for mile the 49 state model will produce LESS hydrocarbon emmissions than the CA model, if you figure in the 20% reduction in fuel mileage.

| Thanks RSL..thank you very much for your valuable information..I will get my tire pressure checked asap...also I should tell you I was riding the bike average of 80 to 90 mph on freeway..now I ride it with 70mph and I get much better mpg..and the traffic in Los angeles causes to much stop and go..it effects the mpg as well I think...KLR650 is a great bike all around

| | Mostly city driving? I get well over 50 mpg on the highway but more like 45 mpg in town--stoplights, more acceleration etc. |

| Many people embellish on mileage. I have a CA model. Has the xtra emmisions stuff. This may make a difference. Lotta stop and go in LA. I get 50 when I drive conservative on a longer trip with no head winds of which is in abundance in Great Falls MT

| I'm in San Francisco, CA, so I've got emissions hardware and heavy winds to contend with. I still average about 57mpg on mixed trips (highway/city/country roads). I'm 6'2", 205lbs plus camping gear too. Greatest mpg factors I've notices are tire pressure (as RSL mentioned), speed (hard accel in the city and fast hwy riding take it way down). Also I notice a decrease when I have my topcase or camping gear on the bike (more drag). Hope slowing it down helps your mpg!

| | I just bought a 2006 and I got 45mpg during the break-in period and have been on it pretty good although keeping it under 4000 rpm. Mine is all stock and also CA model. Van - San Diego |
