I just got my license and plan to buy either an S50 or S83. I'm 53 years old but have never driven a bike until this year. I plan mostly to use it recreationally in the nearby rural roads. Plus I would like to take it on a few longer trips to maine or Nova Scotia. Would an S50 be a more sensible choice than the S83?

since you are a first time rider better stick with the smaller bike. If you are a big person perhaps the S83 will be more comfortable. Don't get your hopes up on taking long trips until you get some riding experience. You may not like the long rides and you may want to stick close to home anyway.

These two bikes are virtually identical. They 800 has more 'get up and go' in stock form than the 1400, but the 1400 has a lower RPM at higher highway speeds which makes for a smoother ride.

Don't discount the 800, btw, which is what I have. I ride it hard & fast...and have done so for 3 years. Longest trip I've done is about 500 miles in a day. But I've done that a few times. You'll want to replace the stock seat on either one you get more than likely.

Buy used, buy cheaper than retail, and you won't be sorry.

The s50 would be better for a beginner. When I first started riding my s50 I thought it had a lot of power. Now, that I'm used to it I wish I would have gotten a s83. One thing though. DO REPLACE THE SEAT. It's very uncomfotable on long rides.
