| I have a 2003 BMW F 650 GS for a year now. I would like to change my own oil. Are there any suggestions? Is it as difficult as I have read about? How about a synthetic oil? My dealer says no but my oil dealer says yes. Any advice would be appreciated.

| Hi Kevin -- glad you're enjoying the GS. It's a great bike. Synthetic oil is fine in your bike . . I've been maintaining BMW's for 20 years or so and there is nothing wrong with synthetics -- actually they have a few advantages over petroleum based oils. Changing the oil is a bit of a pain but I've found a quick way to change 90 percent of the oil in a few minutes. Simply use a small suction pump to drain the oil tank (do it when the oil is hot and the tank is full). Simply refill with fresh oil. Change the filter every other time -- that is usually plenty.

| Easy but remove the sump guard before you do it. Also be really careful removing and reinstalling the drain plug, its alloy and easily damaged along with the internal thread - don't over tighten...use a new washer...
The oil filter change is also basic...use a high quality mineral oil, synthetic oils may give you clutch slip issues...theres a number of sites worth having a look at including the Chaingang, a site dedicated to the 650
