| Were can i find tech information on 04 550 trail tourings?I have a new one but the gas mileage(9 mpg in all around conditions)is terrible and so is top speed of approx 50 mph Engine also seems to ping and our local dealer is of no help.This is my third new polaris and maybe my last if theseproblems cant be sloved soon. ps seems to be alot of 550 engines only losing pistons around this area. please help me.thanks

| I don't have an 04 but just had to have my 00 bored after 3200 miles. One solution from the factory was to richen the carbs out to reduce the heat. We did a thicker base gasket to reduce the compression and reduce heat. Had a retired factory tech do the boring, told me to hold on for more trouble (called friends at the factory). Motor runs to hot (metal head gasket), the engine is holding too much heat. I've been told there is a hood modification that can be done to improve exhausting the heat any ideas? Basically speaking they tried to push too much out of a fan cooled. I can compete in the trails with the 600's but not on a strip.
Atleast I used to be able to we'll see after the rebuild

| I think you are fishing or spreading rumours. The 550 fan cooled engine is one of the best engines built.
The top speed for your machine should be around 60 mph. Check your clutching.
I have not heard of any 550's losing pistons under normal conditions.

| This unfortunately is no rumour. The 2004 have chronic engine problems due to incorect tolerances between the piston and cylinder wall. The dealership in Gander,NL was the #1 dealer in Canada for this model and have personally known of 4 complete engine failures and have heard of probably dozens more. 10 mpg is about the norm after a rebuld and changing the carbs to 2005 spec.
